At Northern Piedmont Sports Club (NPSC), both recreational and travel soccer give players a chance to enjoy the game—but they offer very different experiences depending on what a player is looking for.

Travel soccer is for players who want more training, stronger competition, and a greater commitment to developing their skills. NPSC travel teams are formed through a tryout process and bring together players who are eager to challenge themselves and grow as athletes. NPSCS travel teams train more frequently than recreational teams and have USSF-licensed and experienced coaches. Our travel teams also compete against clubs from across the region, creating an environment that helps players improve technically, tactically, and mentally.

Community Champions Night is a chance to honor those who embody NPSC’s values of always learning, stepping up, and being good teammates. Coaches and volunteers who mentor young athletes and help organize programs will be recognized for their tireless contributions behind the scenes. We will also be voting for our Chairman of the Board.

Big Improvements Ahead: How NPSC's New Technical Direction Is Elevating Travel Soccer

NPSC is thrilled to share several exciting improvements taking shape across our travel soccer program, changes driven by the vision, expertise, and leadership of our new Technical Director, Doug Orr. Over the past several weeks, Doug has begun implementing a training model that is raising the level of instruction for both players and coaches, strengthening our competitive edge, and creating a more unified developmental pathway across age groups.

One of the first major initiatives was a technical-and-tactical training session with the Boys U12 and Girls U11 teams which emphasized one of the most important concepts in the modern game: switching the point of attack. Players and coaches learned what switching play is, why it matters, when to use it, when to avoid it, where it should happen on the field, and how to execute it effectively. Over a 90-minute, five-step progression, players practiced the skills, decision-making, and field awareness needed to move the ball with purpose and break down defensive pressure.

A second major event was the tactical learning session Doug led with our Boys U14 team. This session focused on preparing the boys to face the top-ranked opponent in their division. Doug designed a session centered on real-game application, using a controlled scrimmage between the U14s and an older, more experienced U15 squad. This environment allowed players to learn under pressure and coaches to watch tactical concepts come to life.

During this session, Doug introduced the group to a 4-5-1 formation, emphasizing how to use compact defensive shape, disciplined midfield lines, and smart positional choices to manage stronger opponents. Players were taught when to concede possession, how to force play into less dangerous areas, and why allowing long-range shots and wide attacks can be part of an effective defensive strategy. On the attacking side, the focus shifted to the timing and purpose of counterattacks—helping players understand how to quickly transition from defense to offense with purpose and confidence.

These sessions are just the beginning. Doug’s vision ensures that all NPSC players, regardless of team or age, will benefit from consistent, high-level coaching focused on long-term development, game intelligence, and competitive excellence. We are incredibly excited for what’s ahead and look forward to seeing the continued growth of our players, coaches, and entire travel program. This month, we’re proud to recognize Austin Berecz of the Fall 2025 Buccaneers (Rookie) as NPSC’s Athlete of the Month!

Austin had an incredible season, showing tremendous growth both on and off the field. Whether he was pulling flags, running plays, or cheering from the sidelines, Austin always gave 100%. His energy and enthusiasm lifted everyone around him, and his positive attitude set the tone for the entire team.

On the field, Austin was a key playmaker—scoring touchdowns, reading plays, and always being in the right place at the right time. But what truly set him apart was his character. Win or lose, Austin consistently demonstrated great sportsmanship. He shooh hands with opponents, encouraged teammates, and treated coaches and referees with respect.

At NPSC, our volunteers are the heartbeat of our programs, and this month, we are thrilled to honor Justin King as Volunteer of the Month! Justin’s dedication to youth soccer goes far beyond coaching; it’s about connection, growth, and the joy of the game.

Justin was motivated to volunteer to be actively involved in his children’s teams while deepening his own appreciation for soccer. From the very beginning, he approached volunteering with curiosity and an open mind, eager to learn alongside the players and share in their growth.

For Justin, the rewards of volunteering have been twofold. First, he has cherished the special bond formed with his son and daughter as they navigated learning the game together. Those moments on the field, celebrating successes, tackling challenges, and discovering new skills, have created lasting memories for their family. Second, Justin has experienced the profound impact of connecting with the other players. This month, we’re proud to celebrate Coach Craig MacDonald , our Coach of the Month and the one of the coaches supporting NPSC’s elementary school volleyball team . Craig’s coaching style perfectly reflects what youth sports are all about: growth, learning, and the pure joy of seeing kids believe in themselves.

When asked what he enjoys most about coaching, Coach MacDonald doesn’t hesitate: “The best part of coaching is seeing the improvement over the course of a season.” Whether it’s watching a player finally connect on a serve, understand team rotation, or simply smile with new confidence, Coach MacDonald finds fulfillment in those moments of progress that make all the difference.

This fall has been particularly special for him. “I have a lot of returning kids from the spring, so seeing their growth over the summer and the level of confidence that has increased since the spring has been the most rewarding part,” Coach MacDonald shared. The players’ hard work, and his commitment to helping them reach their potential, shine through every week.

When it comes to what inspires him as a coach, Coach MacDonald's answer is deeply personal: “It has to be my dad, who was always involved as a coach when I was growing up. This month, we are proud to recognize Abby Nash and Marisa Klinkenberger as NPSC’s Sportsmen of the Month ! These two best friends bring an energy and commitment to our high school recreational volleyball program that goes far beyond the game itself.

Abby and Marisa have been part of NPSC volleyball for multiple seasons, and in that time they’ve become known not only for their skills on the court, but also for their leadership, positivity, and team-first mindset. Every week, they are the first to raise their hands when something needs to be done—whether it’s helping set up, volunteering to lead warm-ups, or encouraging teammates who need an extra boost.

Their coach describes them as players who embody true sportsmanship : competitive but fair, hardworking but humble, and always ready to lift others up. When Abby and Marisa are on the court, you’ll see them going for every ball and pushing themselves to give their best effort. When they’re on the sidelines, you’ll hear them cheering the loudest, celebrating their teammates’ successes as if they were their own.

What makes Abby and Marisa stand out most is how seamlessly they blend their friendship with their role as teammates. Their bond sets a tone of trust, encouragement, and fun that ripples across the whole team. Athey Sports Complex Upgrade Update

The Northern Piedmont Sports Club (NPSC), in collaboration with the Warrenton Fields Association, is proud to announce the completion of the first phase of a multi-phase improvement project at the Athey Sports Complex. Phase One officially began on July 9, 2025 and concluded on September 1. Work is scheduled to continue through the spring of 2026.

The Athey Sports Complex is one of the region’s most heavily used outdoor athletic facilities, serving thousands of youth and families through soccer, flag football, volleyball, and other community sports programs. The upgrades have addressed longstanding concerns about field conditions and ensured that the facility continues to meet the growing needs of local athletes.

“This project reflects our shared commitment to providing safe, high-quality spaces for youth to play, grow, and compete,” said Amie Bowman, Executive Director of NPSC. “We are grateful to the Warrenton Fields Association for their partnership and to our community for their ongoing support.”

Phase one updates included field reseeding and new sod installation that will benefit both recreational and travel-level athletes across seasons.

The project is being funded through a combination of club resources, community partnerships, and ongoing fundraising efforts. NPSC and the Warrenton Fields Association will provide periodic updates as work progresses.

At Northern Piedmont Sports Club, we know how important it is for families to plan their weekends, especially during busy sports seasons. That’s why we’re taking a more proactive approach to rain date scheduling this fall. Instead of scrambling to reschedule after weather disruptions, we’ve set aside dedicated rain dates in advance—making it easier for families to know what to expect.

Soccer

If the game is cancelled before September 20 ^th the rain date is September 21 ^st
If the game is cancelled after September 27 ^th the rain date is October 19 ^th

Volleyball

If the game is cancelled before September 20th the rain date is September 21 st
If the game is cancelled after September 27th the rain date is October 12 th

Flag Football/Cheer

If the game is cancelled before September 27th the rain date is September 28th
If the game is cancelled after October 4th the rain date is October 19th

It’s also important to know how weather-related closure decisions are made.

· Soccer & Volleyball → NPSC will make the final call no later than 7:00am on Saturdays . Updates are communicated through PlayMetrics . If your game is still listed in PlayMetrics, it’s on!
Flag Football & Cheer (at Central Complex) → Decisions are made by Fauquier County Parks & Recreation . Our goal is to notify families by 7:30am , but late field closures may happen if the County makes changes after that time. Updates are communicated through PlayMetrics .

By setting clear rain dates now, NPSC is reducing uncertainty, limiting last-minute changes, and helping families plan with confidence. While no one can control the weather, we can take steps to keep our athletes playing, our families informed, and our weekends a little more predictable.

Tinley is part of NPSC’s U10 United Girls Royal , a newly formed travel team that’s kicking off its very first season together. For Tinley, this marks her first step into the exciting world of competitive play. Moving from recreational soccer to travel soccer can be a big leap—new teammates, more structured practices, and a faster-paced game—but Tinley has embraced the challenge with the same enthusiasm she brings to everything in her life.

When you watch Tinley on the field, one thing is immediately clear: she plays with her whole heart. Whether she’s sprinting down the sideline, battling for a loose ball, or encouraging a teammate, her energy is contagious. Coaches and teammates alike will tell you that she works hard every single practice and game, giving her best effort from start to finish. Her dedication to improvement, coupled with her positive attitude, makes her an incredible asset to the U10 Girls Royal squad.

Of course, soccer is only part of Tinley’s story. When she’s not on the field, you might find her spending time with Bitty and Bo , her beloved cat and dog. An animal lover through and through, Tinley’s gentle nature and compassion for her furry friends shine just as brightly as her competitive spirit. Tinley also love s family camping trips a nd exploring the great outdoors. Whether it’s hiking through the woods or simply soaking in the beauty of nature, she enjoys being outside. These trips are special opportunities for her to spend time with her family, make lasting memories, and recharge for the busy soccer season ahead.

Meet Douglas Orr: NPSC's New Technical Director-Soccer

Bringing Decades of Experience and a Deep Commitment to Player and Coach Development, Orr to Lead NPSC Soccer Programming into a New Era

NPSC is proud to announce the hiring of Douglas Orr as its new Technical Director-Soccer . With more than four decades of coaching experience spanning professional, collegiate, high school, and youth levels—as well as Olympic and national team development programs—Orr brings unmatched expertise and a deep passion for developing players and coaches.

In his new role, Orr will oversee the technical aspects of NPSC's soccer programming, including curriculum development, coach education, player development pathways, and the enhancement of technical standards across recreational and travel programs. His hiring represents a major step forward in NPSC’s commitment to growing the game and elevating the experience for every player at every level.

“We are thrilled to welcome Doug to the NPSC family,” said Amie Bowman, Executive Director of NPSC. “His background, vision, and lifelong dedication to player development and coach development align perfectly with our mission. Doug’s leadership will have a profound impact on our players, coaches, and the overall quality of our soccer programming.”

Orr has held a United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Diploma and a U.S. Soccer Federation National C License for many years. His coaching career includes Head Men’s Soccer Coach at the University of Hartford and multiple coaching roles with the U.S. Naval Academy and George Mason University soccer programs, where he contributed to a historic NCAA Tournament Elite 8 finish. He also served as Assistant Coach for the Albany Generals of the original American Soccer League.

In youth soccer, Orr has been a key figure in the development of elite travel programs. He served as Director of Coaching and Director of Travel for Maryland Rush/Annapolis Soccer Club for several years and coached numerous boys’ travel teams at EDP and NCSL levels. His service on Olympic Development Programs (ODP) includes staff coach roles with Region I and various state associations, as well as head coach for the U-23 Connecticut Senior Soccer Association men’s team. He also served as goalkeeper coach for the U.S. Maccabiah team.

Orr’s dedication to soccer extends far beyond the sideline. He currently serves on the Council of Advisors for the United Soccer Coaches Foundation, was honored with the Foundation’s William Holleman Award for Meritorious Service, and was the Foundation’s first Executive Director. A former standout collegiate goalkeeper at Williams College and D.C. Area All-Met first team selection, his coaching experience, volunteering, and accolades as a player embody both the experience and excellence that NPSC values in its leadership.

“I’m excited to join a club that truly values the long-term development of players and coaches,” said Orr. “My goals are to help every player grow not only technically and tactically, but also as confident, accountable, and respectful individuals, and to help every coach pursue excellence. I look forward to building something special with the NPSC community.”

Building Confidence one Serve at a Time

At NPSC, we believe great coaching is about more than just wins and losses—it’s about growth, resilience, and the people our players become on and off the field. This month, we’re proud to spotlight Coach Riley Testerman , whose energetic, motivating, and encouraging coaching style is shaping the next generation of confident, capable volleyball players in our community.

For Coach Riley, the heart of coaching is helping players believe in themselves. “I want every player to walk away with improved skills, a stronger sense of teamwork, and—most importantly—confidence,” Riley says. It’s a philosophy that’s reflected in every practice, every drill, and every moment spent guiding young athletes.

One story that captures Riley’s approach involves a player who was struggling with her serves. Rather than let frustration take over, both coach and player leaned into the challenge. “She didn’t give up, and neither did I,” Riley recalls. “We got through it together, and by the end, she was making every serve.” It’s a simple moment, but one that speaks volumes about the persistence, patience, and partnership that Riley brings to coaching.

That same dedication extends beyond the court. Riley believes the lessons learned in sport are lessons for life—lessons about communication, accountability, and respect. “I want my players to know that mistakes are okay,” Riley says. “We all make them. What matters is that we learn and grow from them.”

This holistic approach to coaching is inspired by Riley’s own experience as an athlete. “Coach Sara Carlson [former NPSC Director of Coaching- Volleyball] was my biggest influence,” Riley shares. “She was always patient, encouraging, and believed in me—even when I didn’t believe in myself. She helped build me into the athlete I am today. I want to be that kind of coach for others.”

And it’s clear that Riley is well on the way to doing just that. Whether it’s pushing players to reach new goals, cheering them on from the sidelines, or taking the time to connect on a personal level, Riley leads with empathy and enthusiasm. Players leave practice feeling challenged but supported—exactly the kind of environment that helps young athletes thrive.

When asked what advice she’d offer to new coaches, Riley’s answer reflects the same values she brings to every training session: “Be patient. Be caring. And have FUN!” It’s a reminder that while drills and strategies matter, the real magic of coaching happens in the connections we make, the confidence we build, and the joy we share along the way.

Independence Day is more than fireworks and cookouts (though we love those too!). It’s a chance to reflect on the courage, resilience, and vision of the people who shaped our country’s beginnings. As a community-based organization, we see those same qualities every day in our players, coaches, and volunteers—people who work together, support each other, and strive for something bigger than themselves.

Whether it’s a young athlete learning to lead, a coach guiding their team, or a volunteer lending a hand, we see freedom in action when individuals choose to serve and uplift others.

Of course, the 4th is also about having fun! This holiday is filled with classic traditions we all love: sparklers, backyard games, ice cream, and red-white-and-blue everything. For our athletes, it's a great mid-summer break to relax and recharge before heading into the fall season. We encourage all our families to make the most of it—soak up the sunshine, enjoy your favorite foods, and share some laughter with loved ones.

And for the young athletes out there, don’t forget to grab a ball and play! Whether it’s a quick pickup game or just kicking around with friends, sports are a celebration of freedom too—the freedom to move, to grow, and to have fun.

The Power of Volunteers: Keeping NPSC Strong and Affordable

At Northern Piedmont Sports Club (NPSC), volunteers are more than just helpful hands. They are the heart of our programs and a driving force behind everything we do. From coaching on the sidelines to setting up fields and organizing equipment, volunteers make youth sports happen. Their time, energy, and dedication don’t just create better experiences for kids, they directly help keep registration costs down.

Why Volunteers Matter

NPSC serves thousands of families across Fauquier, Culpeper, and the surrounding counties with recreational and travel soccer, recreational and travel volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, and flag football. Our programs run year round. Unlike some larger organizations that rely heavily on paid staff or outside vendors, we operate with a lean administrative team and a wide network of volunteers. This intentional model keeps our programs community-driven and cost-effective.

Many people may not realize just how much volunteers contribute to the success of each season. Here’s a quick look at the roles volunteers fill at NPSC:

Recreational coaches and assistant coaches
Team managers
Field setup and takedown crews
Event volunteers for tournaments and club-wide activities
Administrative support for check-ins, schedules, and communications

Every hour volunteered is an hour the club doesn’t have to pay someone else to do the work. That translates directly into savings—and allows us to keep registration fees among the lowest in the region.

Let’s break it down. Hiring paid coaches or seasonal staff for all of our recreational teams would significantly increase our overhead. In fact, if every coach were paid even a modest stipend, we’d be forced to raise registration costs by $25–$50 per player, per season.

Field maintenance and setup is another area where volunteers have a huge impact. Each season, volunteers help place goals, and transport equipment—tasks that would require hiring part-time workers if we didn’t have community members stepping in.

In total, volunteer contributions save the club tens of thousands of dollars each year.
