David Smith
U10 Girls Royal Head Coach
COACHING BACKGROUND
I began my coaching journey in September 2004 as a recreational head coach. During that first season I earned an F license from VYSA. A year later I earned an E license in 2005 and continued as a recreational coach. Three years later I was approached by the club's director to take on a competitive U11 boys travel team. I transitioned into travel soccer in 2008, and continued to coach recreational soccer until 2012. As I worked with that first travel team I earned a D license certification in early 2009. Over the years, I’ve continued my education in coaching through VYSA certificate training, focusing on the midfielder position in 2012 and the striker position in 2014. I also relied on United Coaches online training to continue to apply the best methods of training young players. I've had the opportunities and assignments to work with 6 different teams from U11 to U17 players. I enjoy working with the younger age groups. I get the most satisfaction and I believe it is important to build a solid foundation for the younger player.
My tenant: The skill-sets that players need to be successful in competitive soccer should not be overlooked. Focusing on "player development" comes first. The building the confidence and character in players starts with a coach that understands and holds these qualities.
EDUCATION BACKGROUND
Before my retirement from air traffic control in 2018, I served in the U.S. Navy in the early 1980s as an Aerographer’s Mate at the Fleet Weather Center in Norfolk. Outside of soccer, I enjoy spending time outdoors—fly fishing for brook trout on the Rapidan, hiking to waterfalls and vistas in Shenandoah National Park, and working in the yard or grilling on the deck with family on weekends. I also enjoy traveling to Europe, particularly Madrid, Lisbon, Liverpool, and Paris. Most evenings after soccer training, you’ll find me relaxing with a good episode of Jeopardy—a perfect way to end the day.
